Our Curriculum

We Provide Meaningful and Purposeful Learning Opportunities

Boy Learning

Our Classes

Our pupils are arranged into teaching groups which typically have five or six pupils in each class. Each class is staffed by a qualified teacher and two learning support assistants (LSAs). In some cases there may be an additional LSA in instances where a particular child might benefit from one-to-one support and has been agreed with that pupil's placing local authority.

We aim to provide all of our students with meaningful and purposeful learning opportunities. All of our residential students have access to a waking day curriculum which aims to develop and maintain a consistent approach to education across both school and residential settings. There is a high focus on making our curriculum motivating and rewarding for our pupils. We adopt a multi-sensory approach with a high focus on physical activities.

Details of staff employed and of their qualifications can be obtained from the school on request.

S&L

Our Staff Team

Teaching staff at Eagle House School (Norfolk) are highly skilled in the use of TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and other related Communication Handicapped Children) and SPELL (Structure, Positive approaches and expectations, Empathy, Low arousal, Links). Where appropriate, we use PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and Makaton signing to augment and develop pupils' communicative intent. We base our teaching on a variety of autism-specific approaches, choosing the most effective for each student.

We aim to employ first hand experience, objects of reference, pictures, symbols, and other cues whenever possible to enhance our pupils' understanding of existing and new concepts. Teachers continually evaluate our students work and record progress using photographic and other evidence.

Teachers use the professional knowledge and skills of their clinical colleagues to help pupils learn new concepts, skills and behaviours. They also develop their ability to communicate effectively and appropriately. In addition, each child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), which has specific targets for that young person. These may include educational, communication, social and behavioural targets depending on the particular child. We see it as important that all of our pupils learn to practise their learning outside the school environment.

Each year group makes use of educational visits to enhance the curriculum. Our children have access to horse riding and swimming at the local pool under the supervision of qualified instructors. We are also lucky to be surrounded by magnificent countryside and there is a high emphasis on involving all our students in the local community.
